Upcycling with the masters: At Pineda Covalin, Upcycling Studio of Angela and Mario

By Carol Troy

You walk in, past oodles of galleries at the Fabrica Aurora — San Miguel’s art-gallery-central —  and find yourself in the magical, silk-laden space of Pineda Covalin.  But this is not like the normal PC you find at all the major airports. This is the PC of San Miguel de Allende, the magic city — with clothing artists on exhibit, Angela and Mario.  Here in the back studio, Angela and Mario transmute the fabrics of the world’s garment overproduction into cunning new customized clothes.

You can feel good about buying these ecological denim beauties at Pineda Covalin. Here, with Angela and Mario in their studio, the visitor can take a private look into the magical process of editing, recycling and upcycling the American clothing that arrives by the truckload into the local Tuesday Market near the La Luciernaga mall. Instead of landfill, this denim becomes a sparkling, custom member of your closet.

And the Pineda Colvalin huipil (photo) creates a spooky vision for Day of the Dead.
